In this Linux tip, we’re going to look at the date command. In its simplest form, it provides the date and time in a nice format, including the time zone. It also has options that allow you to display this information in many different ways.
One reason you might want to display this kind of information in different ways is when you’re adding information to a log file of some sort. For example, you might put lines like these in a script to print the date on one line and just the time in later lines.
Another reason is that you might want to see what the current time is in another time zone.
You can even get the date command to tell you the date for Friday of next week.
